The Cambridges Name a New Research Ship

Today, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were in Birkenhead to attend the naming ceremony of the UK’s new polar research ship, the RSS Sir David Attenborough!

The Duke and Duchess were given a tour of the research ship:

They also had the opportunity to meet scientists and  a team of engineers, including young apprentices, who have been involved in the build, and schoolchildren involved in the British Antarctic Survey’s (BAS) Polar Explorer.

Here they are being introduced to Boaty McBoatFace:

The Duke of Cambridge, along with Sir David, gave a speech at the official ceremony while The Duchess had the honor of officially christening the ship with Champaign!

Afterwards, The a Duchess of Cambridge was given flowers by the cutest little penguins on this planet!

And they did an impromptu walkabout to meet those who had been waiting in the rain for them!

The sweet moment William took a picture with a young boy:

The RRS Sir David Attenborough is a new research vessel owned by the Natural Environment Research Council, to be operated by the British Antarctic Survey for the purposes of “both research and logistic support”.

The new boat is named after national (I’d also say international) treasure, Sir David Attenborough:

The Duke of Cambridge has worked with him multiple times over the years. Earlier this year Prince William interviewed Sir David Attenborough at the World Economic Forum:

And here we have both of them together back in the olden days when William had hair haha!

Of course The Duchess of Cambridge has also met Sir David Attenborough on multiple occasions. He is very involved with the Natural History Museum which The Duchess of patron of.

Below, The Duchess seen presenting an award at the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Awards while Sir David Attenborough watched on! This engagement was one of her very first ones after her second pregnancy was announced in 2014.

But perhaps one of the best moments between Sir David Attenborough and a member of The Royal Family was this clip from “The Queen’s Green Planet” where Her Majesty said that loud helicopter sounded like President Trump haha!

For the trip to Birkenhead today, The Duchess of Cambridge repeated her Alexander McQueen ‘utility coat’ with her navy Emmy London Block heels and a new Asprey London clutch!

This was The Duchess’ 4th time wearing this coat. She first debuted it in April 2014 on the Australia and New Zealand Tour and then wore it 2 month later in June for a D-Day ceremony. Catherine then wore the coat in February 2016 (my favorite wear) for a service marking the 75th anniversary of the RAF Air Cadets!
